The European Week of Sport kicks off

One European idea, thousands of people getting involved and countless opportunities to get active together: from 23 to 30 September, the European Week of Sport once again invites people across Europe to experience the joy of movement. In Germany, the German Gymnastics Federation (DTB) is coordinating the campaign for the tenth time.

At its heart, #BeActive is all about participation. It is driven by people who inspire others to get moving, clubs that open their doors, and schools, municipalities, companies and many others who create opportunities to be active where people live, learn, work and come together. #BeActive starts right on our doorstep, because that is where a European initiative turns into real movement.

The European Week of Sport was launched by the European Commission in 2015. In Germany, the implementation of the campaign is additionally funded by the Federal Chancellery in 2026. But it is about more than one week of sport and physical activity. #BeActive creates a shared momentum, brings people together and aims to inspire them to stay active beyond the campaign week.

A European idea brought to life locally

Whether in a sports hall, a park, a school, a workplace, a gym or a public space, movement can happen anywhere. From team sports to individual activities, indoors or outdoors, traditional sports or new trends: under #BeActive, many different ways of being active become part of one shared idea.

#BeActive gives individual activities a common framework and connects them to a Europe-wide movement. The shared goal is simple: to inspire more people to move and lead active lives. It is the many organisers and volunteers on the ground who bring #BeActive to life by creating accessible opportunities for people to get active, try something new and enjoy moving together.

Since 2016, the DTB has served as the National Coordinator for Germany and is coordinating #BeActive for the tenth time in 2026. The DTB combines its extensive network within organised sport with partners and organisations from a wide range of sectors. Together with the many local organisers, it helps spread the #BeActive message across Germany.

The European Week of Sport also highlights the importance of promoting physical activity at every level, from European initiatives to local action. European momentum, national funding and the commitment of the DTB, its partners and local organisers all contribute to one shared goal: getting more people moving. This is how a European campaign translates into real opportunities for people to be active in their local communities.

From 23 to 30 September, the #BeActive map brings together numerous events across Germany, offering plenty of opportunities to get involved in the. The #BeActive Team Challenge also offer a simple digital way to join in and become part of the movement.
